  • The Flutist

Krysten entered a music competition in Worcester. It is called the Young Artists Competition. She entered last year as well. Most of the students are piano players (3/4ths). She didn't win anything last year. She tried again this year and won second place. It was the first time any student from the kids music school ever won an award in this competition. Her music teacher couldn't remember any flutists winning one of the prizes before either. We were very happy (as was Krysten). She hopes to put the cash prize toward flying lessons.

Each year the music school gives out an award to one student. It is basically for being dedicated and for having a good attitude and for participating in extra opportunities to play and represent the school. Krysten won the award this year. It wasn't because of the Young Artists competition. She won this before the announcement of who won in the YA comp.

These two recognitions came after another gift was given to her. A woman who was a judge for last year's Honor Recital told K's flute teacher that she had an old flute that she would like to give to K. It is old and needs work but it is an upgrade for Krysten. A new one would cost about $2,000. It is being fixed up now and soon Krysten will have a new flute to play.

The Lord has blessed her in these things and she is thankful. Now maybe she will believe us when we say she plays well. She really enjoys playing.

  • My Unusual Weekend

Most days are busy with the normal routine of life here in Auburn. Last Friday and Saturday were pleasant exceptions. On Friday morning I was on Fox News Morning show. Of course, I was just in the background. Fox does ZipTrips to local towns each Friday during the spring and summer. This past week they came to 01501, otherwise known as Auburn. Renae and Sean were especially interested in going to see the broadcast. Renae, Sean and I went over to a local park (Godard Park near the fire station for those who know the area) to view the broadcast. It was actually quite educational. Four of the members of the morning crew were broadcasting and displaying interesting people, things and food from Auburn. In between their moments on screen the personalities were busy giving autographs. Sean and Renae were able to look at the satellite truck, all the cameramen and to actually see the director who was really in charge.

I got home just in time to get a quick breakfast and head off with Krysten to the Spencer airport. The instructor of her pilots ground school offered to take her up for a ride in his plane after she passed her FAA test. I drove her there expecting to drop her off and read for a while. Krysten said he had a two seater plane. When he greeted us he asked if I would like to go up for a ride as well. He has three planes and the one he was going to use was a Cessna four seater. I tend to get airsick on planes and car sick in cars but I still wanted to go for the ride. It was a beautiful day after four days of rain. Ed (the instructor) showed us all the planes and went through the pre-flight with Krysten. We headed south past the Mass Pike and then headed east toward Auburn. We circled around Auburn a couple of times pointing out all the important landmarks. Then we headed north over Worcester and once we were north of Worcester we headed back west toward Spencer. I survived the trip without getting sick on the plane though my stomach was happy once we were back on the ground. Krysten hopes to take some lessons from Ed when she makes some money. She wants to fly in the Citabria when she learns because it has a stick instead of a yoke. That is just like Jaina Solo uses in her flying; she is one of the people who inspired Krysten to want to fly. That is a character in the Star Wars series, Gram.

The rest of the day, besides school work, was spent getting ready for my birthday party the next day.

Saturday we celebrated my 50th birthday. We had nice weather and even nicer company. Mom, Dad and Linda made it up from NJ. Gram made it and we invited a couple of families from church. We ate, we talked and we played. I had a good day with friends and family. I received a number of nice gifts but the best was a new MacBook. Now I have my own computer. I hope to explore the things that I can do with this computer.

The weekend ended with a good Lord's Day and a sermon from Philemon.

  • I'm Tired

Wow, it has been a while. This will be quick. Summer ended too soon. We are back at school, though there are only four to home school. I still have to take Erin back and forth to QCC each day(including Sat.). We will eventually need another car.

Krysten is still in a sling. She longs to play the flute again. We will see the doctor tomorrow. We will see what he says.

I took a Basic Motorcycle Course yesterday and today. It went from 9 to 6 each day. We actually started at 8AM this morning to try and beat the rain. It didn't work. I got soaked. We only paused for a while to wait out the lightening and thunder. The classroom stuff wasn't hard. If you read the manual they handed out you could pass the written test they gave you easily. It was multiple choice, need I say more? I had started Sean and Renae's schoolwork early so that they could have two easy days while I wasn't home. We spent about half of each day out on the course. We ran through many different drills. It was a lot of fun, though it was scary at times. Today at the end we took the course test. I need to work on some of the skills, but I passed. Yea!! I was exhausted at the end of both days. It was nice to have my girls make dinner. Last night I went to bed by 10. I am still tired but there is little food in the house so I must get off here and go to BJ's. Bye.

  • Update and Motorcycle

Well, Krysten had the surgery. The doctor said all went well. The resident told Krysten that she would have a nice scar. The resident had never seen the surgery done before and was thankful that Krysten said she could watch. As she was being wheeled into the OR she said that she was glad that she could break her collarbone so the resident could get to see the surgery done.

She is slowly getting back to normal (whatever that is). She thought that she would be able to jump up and do things again. She will be in the sling for six weeks or so. If she heals well, then they will do physical therapy. The pain is a lot less today. She didn't even need any pain killers.

Last night Mike gave me my first motorcycle lesson. We went to the mall parking lot. Boy, was I scared. I almost dumped the bike the first time on my own when it stalled out. After a while I started to feel more comfortable on the motorcycle. I never got out of first gear. I rode in circles both right and left and a long straight stretch. After doing that for a little while Mike took me for a short ride before heading home. The hardest thing for me to do was to get out of first gear into either neutral or second. I think I might need to try different shoes.

We leave on Thursday for our vacation in WV with my family. We are making the trip in two days. We will be stopping at Gettysburg one night. The motel is right on the battlefield. Michelle will stay home and work(the trials of being an adult). We will come home a week from Friday. Bye.

  • Krysten

It is nice to have Erin and Krysten home again. They enjoyed the trip to GA. Krysten did well while away. She really only felt bad that she couldn't join in with everyone else on one occasion. They went to the beach one day and all K could do was wade in the water. One morning she was awakened by a loud alarm and jumped up in bed and hit her shoulder. Needless to say, it was sore that whole day.

We went to the orthopedic Dr. yesterday. After listening to what he said and thinking about it and discussing it with K we have decided to get the surgery done on her collarbone. Next Thursday she will have a 1/2" by 5" plate put in. They will screw both sections of bone to the plate. Her overall recovery time will be quicker and there won't be a bone sticking out on her shoulder anymore. In a year they will remove the plate. Please pray for peace for her. She tends to worry about things and this is surgery. She will stay overnight in the hospital. Mike and I will just be coming home from CA late (11:30PM) on Wednesday night. Please pray for the kids while we are away as well.

Our flight leaves at 8:30AM tomorrow. I am looking forward to the trip and getting to see family.
